Untitled Animal Sculpture (2017)
steel, found objects; suspended from ceiling on nylon string 2 x 2 x 4 feet
Sculptural object that address the expectations of visual communication. With this project I use found objects as a sculptural medium where I alter and merge their given identities to create a new combined identity and unique, whimsical form. The asymmetrical spiral shape is welded out of steel at 4 feet high by 2 feet deep and wide. The result is a colorful, abstract object composed of many small animal shapes. This playful shape intrigues the viewer to move closer to the object to investigate the subtle and unique forms. Invariably the viewer reacts by smiling and pointing out the humorous juxtapositions of the individual animal blends as they study the sculpture closer.
Through this one-liner technique I am communicating a simple idea which playfully invites the viewer in on the notion of expected identity and spectacle. With this sculpture my intention was to say something simplistic and humorous that can be translated immediately and bring a small sense of child-like joy to the audience while also addressing the process of seeing and analyzing forms through visual stimuli.
